Proof Reading

“I was working on the proof of one of my poems all the morning, and took out a comma. In the afternoon I put it back again.”
Oscar Wilde

"FLESCH" it out, trim it or tear it up?

Writing can be frustrating. You know what you want to say but your pen [Keyboard] seems to have a mind of its own. Have you ever read back through your work and all you can make out is a jumble of letters? No matter how many ways you’ve tried to sum it up it still reads as “gobbledegook”?

gob•ble•de•gook
/ˈgäbəldēˌgo͝ok/
Noun
Language that is meaningless or is made unintelligible by excessive use of abstruse technical terms; nonsense.
Synonyms
gibberish

Proof Reading... That's just spell checking, right?!

Wrong!

Did you know there are scales to measure the readability of English sentences? Well, there are. We’re aware of at least 17 and all of them use mathematical equations to calculate readability. For copywriting purposes, it provides a reasonable guide that your work is easily understood by the widest audience.

How can you measure readibility?

In 1975 the US Navy developed a reading standard for military technical training manuals. The “Flesch Reading Ease Score” and the “Flesch-Kincaid Reading Grade” measures the readability of a sentence.

If you're a writer, then the Flesch guide will help you submit compelling and convincing content. The Flesch Reading Ease Score works on a 0–100 scale. The lower the score the more technical or difficult it is to read. The higher the score the more basic it is. The ideal range that 80% of readers respond to is 60–70. This level of writing is attractive to 13 – 15 year olds, upwards.

More of that Gobbledegook

There are many other scales too. For example:

Automated Readibility Index (ARI
Flesch-Kincaid Reading Grade Level
The Coleman-Liau Index
The Gunning Fog index
The SMOG index (Simple Measure of Gobbledegook)

Generally, the ideal score for readability on all indexes is around 8. A higher score means the text is more technical and for a focussed audience. For example a score over 12 would be comparable to reading The Times newspaper. A high score may imply the text is too complicated, awkward and even nonsensical. An unusually low score would suggest either a lack of content or text written for children.
